FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME STUDENTS

Progress toward achieving a degree objective is measured largely, although not exclusively, by credit hours completed. The University classifies as full-time those undergraduates or professional students enrolled in twelve or more credit hours during the fall or spring semester. Enrollment in nine or more credit hours constitutes full-time status for graduate students.

The chart below shows full- and part-time student enrollment by campus for fall semester 2001-02. Full-time enrollment as a percent of total headcount enrollment varies from 44 percent to 86 percent among the campuses. The relatively high percentage for the Bloomington campus reflects the residential character of that campus.

Compared with ten years ago, there has been an increase in the percentage of full-time students on some of our campuses. At the IUPUI campus, for example, the proportion of full-time to part-time students was 43 in fall 1991 and by fall 2001 it has risen to 53. IUPUI, Kokomo, and Fort Wayne have experienced increases of 10 percentage points. The other regional campuses have experienced increases, though less dramatic, in proportions of their full-time students. On the Bloomington campus full-time enrollment as a percent of the total headcount has remained relatively constant.
