ACADEMIC AND ADMINISTRATIVE SPACE BY CONDITION

The space assigned to academic and administrative activities, 9.5 million square feet, is divided into three categories according to condition: satisfactory, in need of remodeling, and to be terminated. Space classified as satisfactory includes facilities that are in an acceptable state of repair and are designed for their present use. Two criteria determine classification of space in the in-need-of-remodeling category: (a) the facility is in need of repair or (b) its design is not well suited to its present use. Facilities in need of remodeling are considered basically sound, capable of being brought to acceptable standards of condition, and adaptable to their present use. Space in the to-be-terminated category includes facilities that would be replaced if better alternatives were available.
For all campuses, 42.5 percent of the 9.5 million square feet of assigned academic and administrative space is in satisfactory condition, 55.8 percent is in need of remodeling, and 2.6 percent is to be terminated.
